Stream Like No One Is Watching, Write Like No One Is Reading

The inspiration for this post comes from a conversation I had with a viewer during my stream last Friday. We were talking about what games we like to play, and I asked him if he did any streaming himself. He responded that he used to, but no one watched, so he stopped doing it. Boy, could I relate to that frustration as a new streamer, a new blogger, and someone essentially starting back over as a cyclist.

It can be very demoralizing to sit there streaming and to talk to yourself about a game with an audience of none. Same goes for this very blog. I’m going to spend a few hours writing this post knowing I can count on my hands how many people are going to read it. I was humbled when I did an FTP Test (this is your baseline you use to gauge your cyclist fitness) for the first time in almost four years, and I came in drastically lower than the very conservative prediction I had made. The worst part is, it’s going to stay that way for a while.

Most projects or challenges that people will undertake will start this way and stay there for a very long time. What makes us so discouraged is it is hard to find the marginal gains we make each time we start a new goal or project, and we quit before we begin to see those marginal gains compound. Let’s visualize how powerful it is when your marginal gains start to compound.

Let’s say you’re walking down the street and someone stops you and offers you these options. You can either get a penny, but that penny will double every day for 30 days, or you can take $1 million today. First, where is this person and where can I run into them? Second, if you think this is a trick question, you’re right! Let’s look at the math written out.

Day 1: $.01
Day 2: $.02
Day 3: $.04
Day 4: $.08
Day 5: $.16
Day 6: $.32
Day 7: $.64
Day 8: $1.28
Day 9: $2.56
Day 10: $5.12
Day 11: $10.24
Day 12: $20.48
Day 13: $40.96
Day 14: $81.92
Day 15: $163.84
Day 16: $327.68
Day 17: $655.36
Day 18: $1,310.72
Day 19: $2,621.44
Day 20: $5,242.88
Day 21: $10,485.76
Day 22: $20,971.52
Day 23: $41,943.04
Day 24: $83,886.08
Day 25: $167,772.16
Day 26: $335,544.32
Day 27: $671,088.64
Day 28: $1,342,177.28
Day 29: $2,684,354.56
Day 30: $5,368,709.12

One week in for our penny, and we are at a whopping $.64. That won’t even get you something on the dollar menu. Two weeks in we are at $81.92, something I would be excited to find on the street, but nowhere close to the million I could have had. At the end of week three, we have $10,485.76, now that is a number to get excited about until you realize it’s still 1/100th of a cool $1 million. We stay behind that $1 million all the way until day 28, and then it takes off from there. Congratulations, your patience just earned you an extra $4,368,709.12! But while that scenario isn’t likely to happen, the truth is that compounding is very very real and very very powerful. The Compound Effect* is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to read more into this subject, and it can help motivate you for your finances, weight loss, or any other success you may wish to have.

The point of that example is you will never get there overnight, and many that do get there overnight don’t have the foundation to stay there. Why do you think so many lottery winners end up broke? Put in the work, even when you don’t see a lot of progress from day to day. By putting in the work, you can very well get their one day and know how to stay there. If you want to be a better streamer or a blogger, try to get one new fan each week when you’re starting. They will keep coming back, and maybe they will share your content so someone else can find you and become a fan. If you want to lose weight, walk around the block every single day and skip a cookie at dinner. You’ll be surprised how much those calories will add up! If you want to grow your wealth or even retire early, start putting away money into investments now! M1 Finance*┬álets you invest as little as $10, and yes, I have gotten $10 tips this year, and I have invested it in M1. Those marginal gains will compound, and one day you will wake up wondering how you got to where you are. Keep at it, especially if you are passionate about it, just keep at it!
